We will offer a short introductory teams session providing an overview of the requirements of expert witness work, the legal principles involved and your involvement throughout the lifetime of a case including conferences, Joint Discussions and Court room skills.

Prior to taking instructions you will be invited to join a Ms. Teams Initial Learning Programme which runs for about eight weeks and covers key topics to introduce new associates to the different aspects of working as an expert witness and legal compliance.  Led by experienced Associates, the sessions are interactive with plenty of time for discussion, questions and answers and the occasional role play.

Fiona Johnson Limited is a recognised provider of independent expert witness services. We can assist in the promotion of your clinical expertise to our instructing clients and ensure that you are nominated and marketed for cases that are within the scope of your area of expertise.

Associate Development Programme

At Fiona Johnson Limited, we are committed to the ongoing development of our self-employed associates and offer an associate development programme (ADL). With a number of components that have been developed  and are reviewed by the clinical board to maintain the highest of standards. The board’s membership includes Fiona Johnson RGN (BSc Hons) and senior Occupational Therapy associates Debbie Pearson, Gail Russell and Katie Charlwood, who are clinically active and bring extensive experience as expert witnesses. The Chair position rotates among members.

The components of the ADL are:

A Manual accompanies the Learning Programme and provides a “go to” reference guide to help new associates navigate the processes involved in undertaking an assessment and subsequent tasks, for medico-legal purposes.  Divided into modules the manual is frequently reviewed and updated to reflect any changes in the industry.
Each new associate is assigned a Mentor who is an experienced expert witness.  Regular meetings will be arranged to guide and support a new associate through their first tranche of assessments, and associated work which arises, including, for example, preparing for conferences, completing joint discussions and joint statements.
A Redacted Report Library They provide a resource for associates to read and review existing reports.
Ready Reference Guides are also available to provide further information pertaining to different aspects of the assessment process, recommendations, calculations, along with access to resources and an experienced office team.

Legal compliance Our expert witnesses are required to undertake medico-legal training to provide them with a understanding of their duties to the Court and the requirement to provide objective, unbiased and fact-based evidence.

Upon completion of the training programme, they should have understanding of the competencies required of them pursuant to the Civil Procedure Rules Part 35, the related Practice Direction (PD35) and the Guidance for the Instruction of Experts in Civil Claims 2014 (Civil Justice Council).We provide refreshers of legal principles, case law updates, compliance with GDPR and presenting with professionalism and resilience when delivering verbal evidence.  We encourage our associates to stay abreast of recent judgments.
